West Shore Miniature Railway
Closed for the Winter
Reopening Easter Bank Holiday Weekend
The West Shore Miniature Railway: young and old alike can enjoy a ride behind both steam and electric locomotives on our track at West Shore. A great family experience and photo opportunity with the Great Orme as a backdrop. The beach and the North Wales Cycle Path are nearby. The railway is maintained and operated by the North Wales Model Engineering Society and members often run their own locomotives during our public running sessions. You can find us adjacent to the West Shore 'Park and Display' Car Park. A Land Train also runs from the Pier entrance on the North Shore Promanade to the West Shore Childrens Playground. The Railway is a short walk along the Prom. A map and further directions can be found here.
The Society was formed over 50 years ago as a result of 3 people meeting in a café in Llandudno. It has grown slowly to its present size with a membership in the region of 70 members.
The Society aims to foster an interest in engineering through the construction of model engines of all kinds. Many members have had no previous training in engineering but with the help of other members have been able to gain such skills as necessary to produce working models.
We also welcome members interested in taking up the opportunity to develop skills in the construction, development, maintenance and operation of our miniature railway. Members are encouraged to take part in the public running events the Society holds and appropriate training on all aspects of running such events, including the driving and maintenance of live steam model locomotives, is available to those wishing to participate.
The Society is continuing the developing of it's facilities at West Shore, Llandudno. Our permanent track, 5" and 31/2" gauge, is approximately a 3rd of a mile in length. August 2016 saw the completion of the final phase of track building. Our next project is the building of a permanent Clubhouse on the site. To help raise funds for this project we hold Public Running sessions on Saturday afternoons, weather permitting, from Easter to October.
During the winter we meet once each month with a mixture of talks on diverse topics, video evenings and there is always the opportunity to discuss the latest engineering problems members may have encountered in their model making. Interested members of the general public are welcome at these meetings. The meetings are currently held at the Craig y Don Community Centre, Queens Rd. Llandudno.
The Society aims to organize at least 2 trips each year to venues of interest to the members and their families, including the main Model Engineering Exhibitions.
Finally, if you are interested in Model Engineering of any kind or would like to help us to build and run a miniature railway at our new site, then why not pop in and see us. We are here most Wednesdays and Saturdays at our West Shore Site. You will be sure of a friendly welcome. You can also contact one of our committee members via the website.
